The Grand Detour of 2019 | Montreal in Small Plates

When we were in Montreal, we made it our mission go visit small plates style bars around the city. We wanted to do small plates style so that we could order various small plates and share the food. This worked out quite well; we were able to enjoy the place, the food, and the drinks without feeling overwhelmed by the amount of food in front of us.

The one craving we weren’t able to satisfy was churros. A tapas place we tried going to was too busy, and another one was not yet serving dessert because they were still only serving salty dishes. Nevertheless, we made the most out of our trip and enjoyed our small plates tour.

We made it to five tapas places. My favorites were Biiru and Bar Henrietta.


For the most part, I really enjoyed Tiradito. It was ~10 minutes walk from Old Montreal. I wasn’t a big fan of the pulpo dish (the sauce tasted charred to me, and that’s not in my flavor palette), but everything else was amazing. I’m glad we stayed for dessert because the alfajores (with ice cream!!!) was a great way to end the meal.

Le Vin Papillon

We stayed at the outdoor patio of Le Vin Papillon, which was a fun and casual experience. There’s no paper menu, and the servers memorize and recommend dishes to you based on what you’re looking for.

Bar Henrietta

After our accidental hike on Mount Royal, we went to Bar Henrietta. It was a nice neighborhood bar. We had squid ink rice and pork belly with chimichurri, and they were amazing. In retrospect, we should have ordered dessert as well; I bet it would have been good.


We had Japanese style tapas at Biiru. I am a big fan of Japanese food, so I felt like we hit the jackpot with this place. We were curious about the watermelon appetizer (because fruits are typically desserts, right?) and were pleasantly surprised by the dish. The service is also amazing; the staff was very accommodating when I realized that I should have ordered a different cocktail.


This was our last stop in our tapas tour. We finally had paella, but chose to forego churros in the interest of time. (We went straight to the airport after this meal.) The place was upscale, and I enjoyed my food. It’s the kind of place I would try at least once.
